CORE

Year 5 Core Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Year 5 Core Course is the foundation upon which your child's  learning is built upon. The teacher guides the students through each  of the following subjects, ensuring they understand the topics and  cover any questions they may have. These subjects include:

  • Mathematics

  • English / Reading

  • Writing

  • Thinking Skills

These subjects form the key learning areas for all primary students and are the main course offered Mr Paul's Tutoring.

Maths: Our Year 5 mathematics curriculum provides students with an in-depth exploration of advanced mathematical concepts. Topics covered include geometry, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, and data analysis. Through interactive lessons, students not only master the foundational principles but also engage in higher-order thinking through problem-solving and real-world applications. Our dedicated instructors guide students in developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, ensuring they are well-equipped for the challenges of upper-level mathematics and beyond.

English: Our Year 5 English curriculum is crafted to enhance language proficiency and foster a love for literature. Students will delve into a diverse range of literary genres, including fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Emphasis is placed on developing advanced reading comprehension skills, critical analysis, and effective written communication. Through engaging activities, discussions, and creative writing exercises, students not only expand their vocabulary and grammatical knowledge but also cultivate the ability to express themselves articulately. Our goal is to instil a lifelong appreciation for language and literature, preparing students for academic success and effective communication in the future.

Writing: Our Year 5 writing curriculum is designed to nurture and refine students' expressive abilities. Throughout the course, students will explore various writing styles, including narrative, persuasive, and informative writing. Emphasis is placed on refining organizational skills, sentence structure, and creativity. Interactive activities and writing prompts encourage students to develop their unique voice and hone their storytelling skills. With a focus on constructive feedback, our writing lessons provide a supportive environment for students to build confidence in their writing capabilities, preparing them for more advanced writing challenges in the future.

Thinking Skills: Our Thinking Skills curriculum for students is designed to cultivate critical and creative thinking abilities. Through a variety of engaging activities and exercises, students develop problem-solving techniques, analytical reasoning, and decision-making skills. The curriculum encourages students to think independently and approach challenges with a strategic mindset. We focus on fostering curiosity, adaptability, and effective communication, equipping students with the cognitive tools necessary for success in academics and beyond. This is a component of the Selective Placement Test and Opportunity Class Placement Test.

WILL THERE BE HOMEWORK?

Yes. Homework is an important aspect of learning as it consolidates the strategies taught by the teacher and allows students to put into practice what they've learned.

We offer the CORE course via face to face or online.

STC

Year 5 Selective Testing Course

ONLY AVAILABLE FROM TERM 2 OF YEAR 5

This course is only offered from Term 2 of Year 5 to Term 2 of Year 6.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will undertake weekly tests that simulate the real Selective Placement Test.

Tests include: Mathematical Reasoning, Reading, Thinking Skills & Writing.

This course aims to:

  • Familiarise students with the format of the Selective Placement Test.

  • Equip students with effective time management skills for exam situations.

  • Teach students optimal strategies for answering questions under exam conditions.

COURSE STRUCTURE

  1. Students will begin by taking a computerised test. (Students must bring their own laptops)

  2. A short break will follow the test.

  3. The teacher will then review all questions with the students.

  4. Students will learn the best strategies for answering each question type.

  5. The teacher will provide feedback and guidance to improve performance.

  6. Students can retake the tests at home anytime during the term for additional practice.

  7. Mr Paul will record every lesson, allowing students to review the videos after completing their retests.

MODE OF DELIVERY

  • IN-PERSON, FACE TO FACE: The students are will take the computerised test at the beginning of the lesson. They are given the same time constraints as the real Selective Placement Test. After a short break, Mr Paul will go through ALL the questions in the test.

  • ONLINE: Students have access to the online test during the lesson. Students will complete the test under the same time constraints as the real Selective Placement Test. After a short break, Mr Paul will go through ALL the questions in the test.

FAQ

1. Is homework assigned for this course?

No, there is no assigned homework for the Selective Testing Course.

2. Can we enrol in only the Selective Testing Course?

Yes, but it is not recommended. If you can only choose one course, we strongly suggest prioritising the Core Course over the Selective Testing Course. This course focuses on teaching test-taking skills rather than fundamental concepts.

3. What happens if my child is sick?

If your child is unwell, we recommend that they stay home to rest. They have the option to join the lesson via Zoom or catch up later using the recorded video once they feel better. Since the tests are computerised, they can be taken from home at any time after the lesson.

4. Can my child take the test again?

Absolutely! Students can re-sit any test they have taken during the term at no extra cost. In addition, Mr. Paul records every lesson, giving students the flexibility to revisit his teaching strategies and refine their skills anytime throughout the term.
