Opportunity classes located in government primary schools cater for academically gifted Year 5 and Year 6 students with high potential. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and educational materials at the appropriate level.

Students sit the computer-based OC Placement Test in Year 4 for entry into Year 5 the following year. The NSW Department of Education now holds placement tests in May. Check the Department’s placement-test page for the dates for your child’s entry year.

Opportunity classes cater for academically high-potential and gifted students in Years 5 and 6 at selected NSW public primary schools. They are different from selective high schools, which usually begin in Year 7.

Application dates vary by entry year. Apply through the NSW Department of Education’s selective high school and opportunity class application portal. Check the official application timeline early; do not rely on the former April–May application window.

The computer-based OC Placement Test has three sections: Reading — 40 minutes, 14 questions requiring 33 answers; Mathematical Reasoning — 40 minutes, 35 questions; Thinking Skills — 30 minutes, 30 questions. There is no Writing test. Use the NSW Department of Education’s current online practice tests to familiarise your child with the format.

The OC Thinking Skills test has 30 multiple-choice questions to complete in 30 minutes. It assesses critical thinking and problem-solving through different question types. Students complete the test on a computer.
